Three figures could be seen making their way down the cracked pavements of the king's highway. The lead character strolled with a purpose, upright and straight backed. His two companions were in a much lower state of health, one could be seen gingerly limping arms and limbs without strength or purpose while the other relied heavily on crutches, both of these companions breathed heavily in the warm night air.
The silence of the night was broken as the man in front spoke.
"Things are not what they once were, life has changed dramatically my friends. You two my brave companions are a perfect example of this, once strong and steadfast now both struggle to hold a blade".
The spokesman didn't realise the emotional pain he was causing his companions, he was merely stating the facts. The one relying on crutches spoke up in a voice that disguised the pain he felt.
"Aye General, the.... effects of the war have been detrimental to everyone's health, some more than others"
At this last sentence he directed his words to the third companion who in turn responded with a shameful nod of his head, sadness slowly taking over his facial expressions as he opened his mouth revealing nothing but a bloody stump where his tongue should have been. The man who was referred to as General looked up and replied.
"Indeed, but we all have our duty there are matters that need to be discussed. I trust that your.... injuries do not stop you from making the encampment tonight?".Both responded simultaneously with various forms of communication, communicating that they both could and would achieve this march.
The three companions walked on, the night air was warmer than usual hinting that rain was soon to come. All seemed well about the night, however the lead man stopped and turned to his companions, old comrades in arms. With a quick gesture of his hand he relayed his suspicions that they were being watched.
In response his companions clumsily withdrew into a parody of various fighting stances. As if on practised cue a shadowy figure seemed to rise from the stand of trees adjacent to the highway slowly making its way slightly to the front of the three companions. The General stiffened in response guessing but dreading what was too come.
"Who are you and why do you stalk soldiers of the king!" the general spoke in the voice that he used to command men on the battle field, its volume shattering the returned silence of the night.
In response the shadowy figure spoke its voice giving away the fact that "it" was a female.
"Do not duel words with me "General" we both know why I have come, do not make this lengthier than it has to be".
The General's heart sank as his realisation was confirmed. He replied in a voice flat and emotionless skilfully disguising the sadness and anticipation that he was sure would come.
"If you have come for my friend then do not expect him to die without a fight". As soon as the General spoke he realised how cliché and pathetic his words sounded.
The masked woman chuckled mirthlessly in response, and nodded her head in what was obviously excitement at the fight that was too come. Subtlety her hand dropped to her side seeking and finding the hidden blade that was concealed, keeping her eyes on the trio she checked to see if they had noticed her movement, confirming they had not her face broke out in a smirk.
"We will see General, we will see". The companion without a tongue struggled to convey a message to his friend, seeing that the General understood he relaxed.
"My friend says that he knew this day would come, he says he will fight hard. I assume you already knew this." The last line was a statement not a question. The shadowy figure slowly stretched as if warming herself for the fight that was too come. Almost in slow motion the General saw the pale glint of steel concealed in the assassins hand, he dropped his hand to his blade in a flurry of motion withdrawing it all in one motion.
The shadowy figure noted the motion of haste but without hurry or panic she silently cocked her arm and threw with accuracy all in one motion aiming for the dumb sergeant.
The man with the drawn blade violently pivoted on his left foot, throwing out his arm holding, the sword desperately trying to put the blade between the fatal path of the flashing dagger. In slow motion everyone present saw the generals blade cutting through the still night air driving straight for the path of the dagger, everyone present then saw with different emotions his blade continue its path and collide with... nothing.
THUNK!
A small gasp of surprise and pain.... silence.... then the slow and steady sound of a man falling to his knees.... the gurgling sound of a man desperately trying to live, desperately trying to rewind the impact of a fatal object. Once again the stillness of the night returned for an instant, the night the same as before noticing nothing different.
Rage filled the ears of the General, rage at his friends death, at the seemingly ease at which the assassin had ended his friends life and at the fact that his old comrade hadn't even had the chance to fight for his life. With a look of madness the general charged the smirking assassin murder in his eyes. Once again without haste the assassin whispered one sentence.
"His debt is repayed, the Crime Syndicate has returned the favour". In a motion that was hard to follow the woman threw a small object to the ground and in reply a screen of thick billowing smoke filled the night air.
With anger and dread in his heart the General vainly slashed through the smoke, trying with all his might to make the smoke dissipate and reveal the murderer. The smoke cleared and with it the confirmation of the assassins disappearance. In response to the empty space the General collapsed dropping his blade with a clatter. Looking to his still friend, watching as Liutenant Ladimore fort through his own pain and struggled in vein to revive his fallen friend, he whispered on sentence, a sentence that conveyed the raw sadness and grief that he felt.
"I have failed you my friend, once again it seems that i have failed a comrade. This will not go unavenged".
Then looking to the sky the General allowed tears of anger and sadness to slowly form trails down his grief filled face.
