I am Zane and this is my story.
I was born to a peasant family in a far off land. There was a sorcerer there by the name of Parry and when I started showing magical capabilities he payed my parents to raise me as his own. Over ten years of my life he raised me and taught me white magic to become a cleric and have the land benefit from our magic. That is when I met Lilah another apprentice cleric we immediately became friends and our instructors trained us together. Those were the best days of my life me and Lilah became very close and trusted each other with our lives. That is when things turned for the worse though I did not know what was happening at the time. She started showing me aspects of our power that could hurt people.... and I liked it. After we finished our apprenticeship we went exploring the world together, but not to help it. we became bandits ransacking homesteads throughout the land using our powers that were supposed to help people to destroy them. We found out about a cult of magic users like us and joined it thinking that we were going to learn more and rise through the ranks of the cult. She thought that being in the cult was the best thing that happened to her and I didn't want to lose her friendship so i stayed with them. The cult was to worship a realm of fire and demons that they called the Nether. Every year or so they sacrificed one of their number to the Nether sending them throughout their black doorway with nothing but a leather helm. Around the third year we had been with them it was decided that she would be the sacrifice, and she was more than happy to oblige. While we were there we had grown apart but I still cared for her and was against the idea. The day before the ritual would take place I met her in secret and asked her to run away with me to a distant land away from this strife but she declined saying that this was her place in the world and I returned to my room grief stricken. The next day the dread ceremony began. They awoke me to take her to the black portal as tribute to the evil in the Nether and I accepted hoping to make her last moments on the surface good. While we walked to the shrine she confided in me that she was scared and didn't want to go through the portal and I told her, "If you were not afraid you would not be human, but if you choose to take it there is a way out of this we can take them."
She said, "Then what are we waiting for?"
She was acting like her old self again and i couldn't have been happier, so just before the portal we turned around and attacked the other dark priests. After that there was a melange of fighting and after it was over the other cultists were dead and the Nether portal destroyed but I didn't see Lilah anywhere. Listening i heard a hoarse laughter and went to it. It turned out to be the dying leader of our order. I asked him, "Where is Lilah you despicable creature?"
He said, " So rude to the one who trained you in the dark ways its sad really." and had a coughing fit.
I said, " I'll ask you one more time before I make you wish you were never alive!" By that time i had a bad feeling about what had happened
but didn't want to believe it. but thing did not turn out the way I wanted them to and he told me with his dying breath that she had been pushed through the portal during the fight and then it was broken so she could not be saved. I spent a couple of months grieving for my lost friend in the wilderness. After a whileIi began to get a notion that she might still be alive in the Nether so I searched all over the kingdom but did not find one but I had heard that there might be one in the kingdom of Mirugan to hopefully find a portal to save my friend.
