I do think a sever-stocked market (NPC market if you will) would help normalize the economy. Players could sell materials to the market, and buy from the market, thus generating money for the world itself. This would provide a supply for the more rare items, and create a demand for Trade Channel negotiations. Towns could be allowed markets supplied for by the town members thus creating cross-town travel and trade. Player-controlled market systems almost always fail (I could point out many MMOs out there that had open market systems that eventually collapsed due to no centralized in-game NPC market pricepoint). You guys do a great job with the server, but there are, as you said, issues with the current economy. Some items are not available at all, while others are worthless. Also, no access to Nether-related items is preventing the creation of potions (which are a market in themselves), limited Glowstone supplies, and a non-existence of Nether-brick, Soul-sand, etc. The ban on Obsidian is a bit overboard as well (as I would like to build structures out of obsidian) and you would be better off banning portals instead of Obsidian.
/my two cents

OK, quick thing my town has over 8000 GsD we use that money to build the town and buy stuff now i think though that we should just trash the chest shops instead of destroy all the stuff that we worked for i worked really hard and only have 1 diamond so instead of ruining the GsD my town has in the bank plz consider just taking away the shops after all this is an RP server unless that has changed and the shops are not RP in my eyes the shops are what ruins the money system not the not the GsD for the shops can have diffrent prices than the other shops so someone can continually make more and more money until they have no inventory space left or the shop they are farming gets full or the shop owner stops the shop or if the shop owner runs out of GsD don't you see that alone proves my theory i hope you see it the way i do i have also talked with another palyer with the same thought. you obviously dont get the point. there are plenty of players that understand that the econ is ruining player enjoyment, and to tellyou the truth money doesnt mean -Censored-. what matters is what you build. money just gets you extra things but in minecraft you dont even need money you can gather all the resources but still my first statement still stand, go study about economy before you throw out ill minded ideas. the shop system as itself is good. the larger shops are what is bad, they have already been closed. the current economic standing of the server does not encourage trade.

if you want whats best for the server then you will stand by and keep playing.
i really dont mind if people quit because of this, you guys may think im screwing you over but if you look at it in the broad spectrum im helping everyone out.
so quit being babies. its just money
