Name: Zake.Delango
Age: 19
Race: Vampire
Mindset: I am not one to speak. I am not one to talk unless needed. I would kill anyone, including myself, without blinking an eye to save a friend.
I stare at the bare ceiling that hangs a few feet above me. Hours pass as I try to sleep. Hours of staring into the blank wooden ceiling. I sigh and roll over to look outside the window to my right, a warm breeze passes through the open window. The night is still young, a full moon rising over the sea. At least an hour passes before I begin to drift into sleep.
I'm walking, beside my father and mother under the darkness of night. A layer of clouds above our heads, threatening to rain. We walk uphill, branches and rocks hidden in the tall grass scratch our legs as we walk. At last we reach the top of the hill, winded and tired we set up a camp. We start a fire and sit down on the grass, even with the threat of rain. I look down the side of the hill, opposite side that we climbed. Plains sit before us as far as the eye can see. The smooth, grassy landscape disturbed by a lone tree. The fire radiates a warm heat, it warms our cold hands and feet as we rest. My father assures my mother that we are half a day away from our destination.
"Where are we going?" I ask.
"A city. I cannot remember the name, but it was always near us, we just never noticed," he answers.
When we rise the next morning, we eat a bit of dried beef. My father found a small stream of water and hands us each a leather skin filled with water. I take a small drink from it, knowing that it must last the day in case there are no more streams or rivers to drink from. We look out towards the plains that spread out before us. We start to make our way downhill. My foot hits a rock and I trip, rolling downhill through the grass a few feet before coming to a stop. I slowly stand up, spitting out curses at my bad start to the day. My father laughs, but my mother has a concerned look on her face. We continue on for hours, but at last I see the walls of the city rise on the horizon.
When we step foot onto the bridge, we are greeted by arrows drawn and aimed at our heads, spears leveled to stab our chests. We dare not move or say anything. They search us, taking my knife and my fathers sword, but leaving anything that couldn't be used as a weapon with us. I get a good look at those who search us. They wear iron armor, an iron sword at their side, but only to be used as a backup. Once they have searched us, all but two drop their aim. Two guards move behind us, their spears leveled, ready to attack. Another takes the lead in front of us. As he pasts us I can't help but notice his red eyes. The gate rises and we walk through it, it closes as soon as we are through.
We walk through the streets, crowds move to the edges of the streets as we pass. Shops, market stalls, and houses burst with life and people. Our shoes softly click as we walk. At last my father asks the same question that was on my mind. "Where are we going?" he asks the lead guard.
"To see him," the guard answers plainly.
"Who?"
The guard stops and turns to face my father and answers, "Kaelan Zapman," and turns and continues to lead us through the streets.
Some time passes and we stand at the stairs of a stone building, stone pillars holding up the roof. We walk up the stairs, the guards trailing a few feet behind us. When we enter in the two guards that were behind us leave us and stand at the doors, the hilt of their spears on the ground to the inside of the door. The guard with the red eyes bids us forward as we walk through the maze of hallways. We reach a pine log door, the guard that was leading us through the hallways slowly pushes them open and I see him. Sitting on the throne, Kaelan Zapman...
I wake, staring out the window, a warm glow greets me. I make my way down to the basement and grab bread. I eat as I walk upstairs. When I reach the top of the stairs I hear a knock on my door. I open the door to find two of Kaelan's guards stand at the bottom of the steps. "Can I help you?" I ask them, trying to hide any fear in my voice.
"Kaelan has requested to see you," they say and turn and walk off.
I reach beside my door for my sword, only to remember I broke it while practicing sword fighting. I make a mental note to see a blacksmith later in the day. I step outside my house, turning to lock the door, and make my way to the council hall. I walk through the streets, dodging people as I pass through the streets. I reach the council hall and enter, the guards at the door ignoring me. I make my way through the maze of hallways, getting lost a few times, to the throne room. I enter the room, only to find it empty. At the far end of the room sits a throne with a golden crown in it. I study it from a distance, it appears to be made of gold with emeralds. I hear someone muttering something about not being able to find a cloak and turn to find that the person muttering is Kaelan. Behind him, two people walk, at first I think they are people, but as he passes me, I notice they are wings! He makes his way to his throne, picking up his crown and turns to look at me. "I never did like crowns," he says to me, turning it in his hands. "A gift from a dwarf that I met in the sixth age. A nice guy he was, for a dwarf."
"Umm, sorry sir, but why am I here?" I ask, trying not to sound disrespectful.
"Oh yes, I have something to offer you," answers Kaelan.
"And that would be?"
"Immortality."
"Immortality?! Sorry sir, but what?" I ask, extremely confused.
"Never dieing from age or sickness."
I let this sink in. Never dieing from age of sickness? Being able to live forever? Who wouldn't accept that? "What do I have to do?" I ask.
"Just accept my offer, but be warned, our kinds death is always painful. There is no such thing as a peaceful death as a vampire." Kaelan answers, a cleverly hidden sadness in his voice.
"So be it," I say simply. I hear something move behind me, but never get the chance to turn to see it. I feel something hit me from behind and I black out.
When I wake again, my wrists are tied down. A throbbing headache greets me as I wake. I simply sigh and go back to sleep, extremely tired. When I once again wake, my wrists are no longer tied down. My legs are stiff and I fall on the cold stone floor as I try to walk. I stand again, feeling returning to my legs. I'm winded, I place my arm against the wall and try to catch my breathe. That's when I notice how pale my skin is. I hear Kaelan's words, "A vampire," he said. So he has changed me into a vampire. I did accept this after all.
At last I have managed to catch my breathe and I open the door at the far end of the room. When I enter the hallway, I am blinded by the brightness. When my eyes adjust to the brightness, I look around, down one end of the hall is a series of rooms, the other is nothing but a stone wall, but I notice a stone button. I make my way towards the button, and press it. I hear pistons move and the stone wall in front of me opens up. I walk through the stone wall and am stopped by a guard. I look at him, my reflection in his iron helmet. My skin pale, my eyes red, and my mouth... I appear to have fangs. "Hello Zake," says the guard.
"Hello," I answer him. "Where is Kaelan?"
"Gone," he answers. I can't help remembering the sadness in his voice and in his eyes. Him saying that a vampire's death is always painful. A idea enters my mind, but I refuse to believe it. "He disappeared in one of his tunnels. We heard pistons move in his throne room and he was gone. But I wouldn't worry about Kaelan, he's been around for thousands of years."
"Ok," I say, still confused. "How long was I out for?"
"A week and a bit," he answers.
"Why was I tied down?"
"How many times do you remember waking up?" He asks.
I think for a minute and answer, "Twice."
He laughs a little but then stops. "You woke up seventeen times during the week, screaming and yelling. That, is why we tied you down."
"Oh..." is all I can say. "How do I get out of here?"
He points behind me and tells me to stick to the left wall. I thank him and make my way down the hall way, sticking to the left wall like he told me. A few minutes later I make my way outside and look at the sky. A darkness surrounds a glowing moon. "So I'm a vampire now?" I think to myself. So be it...
